American clergyman (1835-1893) best known as the lyricist of the popular Christmas carol 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.' TLS, one page, 4.75 x 7.75, personal letterhead, January 4, 1893. Letter to "My Dear Waters," in part: "I thank you for your letter and shall look forward with pleasure to my visit to Chelmsford. I came there last year for a service in the afternoon. Your note contemplates a service in the evening. I should only wish to do whatever was best for the parish; and can come in time for an afternoon service if you wish it; but if the evening service seems to you to be preferable, I will come in the five o'clock train from Boston and Dr. Chambre will take me in for tea and I can come to you afterwards." In fine condition. An interesting letter dating to three weeks before his death.
