Famed aviation artist (1914-2001) known especially for his work at McDonnell Douglas and for his naval aviation paintings; the 'R.G. Smith Award,' named for him, is awarded annually for excellence in naval aviation art. Huge original painting by R. G. Smith of a United Airlines jet soaring through the clouds, accomplished in oil on stretched canvas, 46 x 34, signed in the lower right corner in paint, "R. G. Smith." In fine condition. A marvelous, oversized painting by an artist the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum describes as 'The 'Old Master' of the Sky.'
