Description

The Ramones smash the Berlin Wall

Two items from the collection of Ramones tour manager Monte A. Melnick, including: an original 2.5 x 2 x 1 chunk of spray-painted concrete from the Berlin Wall, personally obtained during the Ramones tour of Europe in 1989; and a 14-page itinerary packet for the Ramones' tour of Germany, Belgium, and Holland between November 21 and December 5, 1989, annotated throughout by Melnick. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Melnick, in part: "We were in Berlin Germany November 1989 to play a show and the promoter of the show went to a hardware store and got some hammers and chisels and brought us to the Berlin Wall. At this time the wall was starting to come down and was being chipped away. All the Ramones and myself got pieces of the wall." Also includes two photos of the Ramones and Melnick at the Berlin Wall, chisels and hammers in hand.

After four consecutive concert nights in Germany, the Ramones earned a day off when they traveled to Berlin to play at the Eissporthalle on November 26th. The breach of the Berlin Wall only weeks prior continued to dominate current world news, and the Ramones were eager to take home literal pieces of history. A fantastic relic connecting punk rock with world affairs. From The Monte A. Melnick Ramones Collection.
