Description

Pair of items signed by the outdoorsy American authors, including an AQS by Bret Harte and a check signed by Jack London:

Bret Harte
American author (1836-1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat.' Beautiful AQS, one page, 6.75 x 8.25, August 13, 1878. Harte pens an "Extract from 'Luke,'" concluding: "But we'll always think of you, Luke, as the thing we could not take away,— / The balsam that dwells in the pine, the rainbow that lives in the spray,— / And you'll sometimes think of me, Luke,—as you know you once used to say— / 'A rifle smoke blown through the woods!'—a moment—but never to stay." The reverse bears two autograph verses by Richard Henry Stoddard, signed "R. H. Stoddard." In fine condition, with light edge toning.

Jack London
American novelist, journalist, and social activist (1876-1916) best remembered for his novels The Call of the Wild and White Fang, and short stories ’To Build a Fire,’ ‘An Odyssey of the North,’ and ‘Love of Life.’ The Merchants National Bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by London, "Jack London," payable to Andre Caster for $3.75, stamp-dated October 6, 1910. In fine condition.
