Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman, victor over Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo and twice elected Prime Minister (1769-1852). Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Wellington,” one page, 13 x 9, October 24, 1821. Commission appointing Henry Bowden, Gent. as “Ensign and Lieutenant” in the Third Regiment of Foot Guards (subsequently the Scots Guards) “commanded by our most dearly beloved His Royal Highness William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester K.G.O. and C.B. Field Marshal of our forces and to take rank in our army from the 15th March 1821." The document is signed at Whitehall on 24th October 1821 and represents the purchase of a Lieutenancy. Wellington’s signature can be seen bold and clear over that of Lord Liverpool (“Liverpool”), the Prime Minister at the time; and underneath two unidentified Lords’ signatures. The royal seal of King George IV and duty stamp affixed to the left side remain fully intact. Framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 10.5. In fine condition.
Wellington at the time was Master General of Ordnance, having been appointed on 1st January 1819. King George IV did not have his coronation until July 1821 and it was not uncommon for the Lords’ Justice to sign commissions on the King’s behalf during the period from the death of King George III in 1820 to the coronation. It is, however, uncommon to see Wellington’s signature on a commission document.
