ALS, one page, 5 x 7.75, engraved Thirty-Ninth Congress letterhead, December 20, 1865. In part: "I received your telegram; & my regret at being unable to come to Lowell is greater than yours can be. The Senate were unwilling to adjourn for as long a time as the House indicated, & fixed Jany 3rd as the date instead of the 9th…You will see that no business will be done…till Monday the 8th; but with my sense of public duty I cannot consent to be absent from my post any day that the House is to be in session."
