Description

Unusual appointment for an American consul in Peru, signed by two abolitionist presidents

Extraordinary partly-printed DS as president, signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 20 x 15.75, January 22, 1862. Unusual document marked "Duplicate," being an appointment for Charles F. Winslow of Massachusetts to be "Consul of the United States of America at Payta." Crisply signed at the conclusion in ink by President Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward. The reverse bears a lengthy endorsement in Spanish, signed at the conclusion by Ramon Castilla, the president of Peru. In very good to fine condition, with overall light creasing, and tiny areas of paper loss at some of the the intersections of its multiple folds. By this document, President Lincoln named Charles F. Winslow, a Harvard Medical School-educated physician, diplomat, and world traveler, as the US Consul at Payta, Peru, a noted whaling port. This piece boasts an especially remarkable association: just as Lincoln was responsible for ending slavery in the United States, Castilla abolished slavery in Peru. A decidedly intriguing diplomatic appointment from the Lincoln administration, boasting an international pairing of bold, crisp presidential signatures.
