Description

Attractive shadowbox-style display featuring Civil War items belonging to Lt. Franklin Burnham of the 9th New Hampshire Infantry, presented in a frame that measures about 11 3/4″ x 10″ x 2″. The interior is lined with a caramel colored velvet upon which are fixed an original carte-de-visite of Lt. Burnham in an officer's single-breasted frock coat, a well-worn leather wallet, a Rodgers quill knife/ink eraser with slightly cracked bone handle, and one half of the leather carrier for the knife. A small brass plaque attached to the backing reads: “Items belonging to 1st Lt. Franklin J. Burnham, 9th New Hampshire Infantry.” Lt. Burnham's CDV is also pictured in his biographical entry in the Civil War Database (a copy of which is included), which lists his enlistment age as 19. Burnham enlisted as a Private on July 25, 1862, and mustered into Co. E 9th NH Infantry on August 8. He received a string of promotions during his service, and mustered out on June 10, 1865, as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. K. This is a neat, and attractively packaged piece of history that would make a nice addition to a study or home library.
