Description

The 17th Vice President of the United States (1823-1885) who also served as a United States Representative from Indiana and as the 25th Speaker of the House of Representatives. ALS, one page, 5 x 8, Vice-President's Chamber letterhead, March 15, 1871. Letter to William Prescott Smith, in part: "When I returned Saturday from my hurried visit to Camden, I found you had gone, but I cannot let the occasion pass without thanking you for the courtesies…When we took the cars at W. Phil'a Sunday night at 12.50, we found the sleeping berths all ready for us, thanks to your thoughtful kindness." In fine condition.
