Polish theatre and film director, actor and teacher of acting (1889-1937) who founded the American Laboratory Theatre in New York and instructed students such as Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Harold Clurman. In Hollywood, he directed more than a dozen significant films with some of the major stars of his day, such as Greta Garbo, Lionel Barrymore, Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich, and Joan Crawford.
