Description

French military officer (1725-1807) who made a substantial contribution to the American Revolution, including a leading role in the defeat of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Manuscript DS in French, signed “Le cte. de Rochambeau,” one page, 8.25 x 13.25, 1772. Untranslated military promotion, approved at the conclusion by Rochambeau as Inspector of Infantry. A red wax seal is affixed to the lower left. In very good to fine condition, with splitting along folds (some of which have been repaired on the reverse), and two small areas of paper loss at fold intersections. Originally sold by Goodspeed's Book Shop and accompanied by their paper folder.
