American artist (1932-2007) who became influential in Britain with figurative and Pop Art paintings that ran against the grain of 1960s and ’70s abstraction; he was influenced by a wide range of art and intellectual sources, including Kafka, Kierkegaard and Walter Benjamin and painters from Titian to Cézanne. ALS signed “Kitaj,” one page on the reverse of a 6 x 4.25 color postcard of Ronald Reagan, postmarked June 29, 1983. Brief letter to Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, in full: "I left messages at Rota and Skoob! I had a mint copy of A Lume Spento for you, but too late now…" In fine condition.
