Description

Collection of unsigned ephemera related to the 1877 presidential election, including: a yellow admission pass to the gallery of the House of Representatives for "Counting the Vote for President and Vice-President," February 22, 1877; a blue admission pass to the gallery of the House of Representatives for "Counting the Vote for President and Vice-President," March 2, 1877; a Republican national ticket listing Hayes and Wheeler as the party's nominees; a ticket listing Samuel J. Tilden and Thomas A. Hendricks as the Democratic nominees; and a folding trade card for Blackwell's Durham Tobacco featuring folding images of the two presidential candidates. In overall very good to fine condition, with mounting remnants to the reverse of both passes. The 1876 presidential election ended with contested electoral votes in several southern states, and Congress formed a special commission to determine the result. The commission first met in the House Chamber on February 1, 1877, and ultimately—after several successive meetings—awarded Hayes with 185 electoral votes to Tilden's 184.
