Description

American athlete and author (1868-1957), who in 1896 became the first athlete in the modern Olympics to win a medal. AQS on an off-white 5.25 x 7.5 book page, signed and inscribed in black ink, "Inscribed for and with all good wishes to S. D. Green, Trenton, N J., James B. Connolly, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, May 21, 1924." A quote from Connolly's short story Dory-Mates, from his 1905 collection The Deep Sea's Toll, in full: "'Ye'll never fish again, Martin Carr; ye'll never haul trawl or row dory again, nor stand to a wheel, nor reef a sail…Ye're such a creature, Martin Carr, as men throw pennies to in the street, but the last thing you did in your full man's life—maybe Jack Teevens will remember it when in another world he meets ye, that out of love of him ye stood by his boy—were a fulldory-mate to him.' Dory-mates." In fine condition, with a stain touching first letter of signature.
