Description

Engineer (1890-1974) known for his pivotal role in the development of the atomic bomb as a primary organizer of the Manhattan Project. Group of three TLSs, signed "V. Bush," each one page, 8.5 x 11, Carnegie Institution of Washington letterhead, dated 1947-1952, all to Dutch-American physicist Samuel A. Goudsmit. The first two mention arranging visits, and the third reads, in part: "I had quite a time before the Immigration Commission and I hope I did some good. It is always hard to tell in such instances. As a matter of fact the press picked up one statement I made out of context and made me look a little foolish, but actually I stated both sides of the question rather carefully and put my emphasis on simplifying the procedures and so on…I rather doubt whether there will be much more action on the immigration bill. But the report of this Commission certainly ought to result in shaking some of the foolishness out of the procedure as it has been carried on by various agencies." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corners, and a block of light toning to the earliest letter.
