American entrepreneur, abolitionist and philanthropist (1795-1873) whose legacy lives on in numerous foundations and institutions, such as Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University. Partly-printed DS, one page, 10.25 x 6.75, August 17, 1865. Stock certificate for three shares in the Baltimore and Ohio Company railroad issued to Catharine Meyer, signed at the conclusion by Hopkins as the company's president pro tempore. The certificate features a handsome vignette of a locomotive. In very good to fine condition, with some staining, and two cancellation holes, one affecting the first two letters of Hopkins' surname.
