Description

English abolitionist (1760-1846) who was a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire. ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, May 9, 1845. Letter to Mr. and Mrs. Biddell, in part: "I am not able even get to cross the room without help; and as to going downstairs and getting into a carriage, that is utterly impossible, yet I am without hope, that I shall be able to put a shoe on, and to get to the door downstairs, with assistance in a few days. Of all my illnesses, this has been the worst, the most painful, and the most trying…You have very seldom been out of our thoughts since the melancholy event took place. We have sympathized with you…Who, that has a heart to feel, could abstain from mourning at the loss of such a child of promise, cut down like a fair flower in its bloom." In fine condition, with scattered light staining, and an old piece of clear tape to the center of the signed page.
