Beloved Danish author (1805-1875) best known for such classic fairy tales as The Ugly Duckling, The Red Shoes, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Hand-addressed mailing envelope, 5.75 x 4.75, addressed by Andersen to his English translator, "Horace E. Scudder, Esq., New-York, Riverside-Cambridge, Mass., paid," and signed at the bottom, "(from Hans Christian Andersen)." In very good condition, with creasing, soiling, and central horizontal fold. In their published correspondence, Scudder once explained his process: 'I am pleased you are satisfied with the translation of your stories. I have put them into an exact English version and then go over them myself with great care, endeavoring to give those touches and quaint turns of expression with a long study of your writings has made me acquainted.' Andersen replied: 'I could not wish for a better translator than a man who is spiritually akin to me.' A fantastic example of Andersen's Anglicized autograph.
