Description

Confederate military officer and politician (1818-1902) who replaced J. E. B. Stuart as Lee's Chief of Cavalry following Stuart's death on the battlefield. Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “Wade Hampton, Col. Cos.,” one page, 12.25 x 7.75, September 1861. Abstract of provisions for 101 men issued from August 23 to September 12, 1861, to "Capt. Bachman's Company, Hampton Legion stationed at Hampstead & removed thence to Richmond," which includes rations for "fresh beef," "bacon," "flour," "hard bread," "beans," "rice," "coffee," "sugar," "vinegar," "candles," "soap," and "salt." Signed at the conclusion by Hampton. Double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 29 x 17.25. In fine condition, with paper loss along the top edge.
