AMS in German, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, New Year's 1940. On the front page, Hesse writes (translated): "Two poems from the Wartime, 1914/18." He goes on two write the twenty-line poem "Friede [Peace]," and the eight line poem "Wenn Auch [If So].". In fine condition. A fantastic autograph poetry manuscript from the Nobel Prize-winning scribe.
