ALS signed “Bob, Robert Stroud #594,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.25, Alcatraz prison stationery to which he adds his full name and prison address at top letterhead, January 6, 1958. Letter to Fred E. Daw, his longtime friend and president of the Chicago Bird Club, in part: "I hope that you enjoy your game, but that is one place we part company, Fred. To me sports are merely exercise. That is their only justification for existence, and even if I could, there is no way in which I could be induced to attend one or to listen to one on the radio, but since you enjoy them I am glad that you have the opportunity…I am still spending a few hours a day with Cicero, and in my translation of some of his speeches I had wonderful occasion to add notes, comparing the facts brought out about points of Roman culture and institutions with those from other parts of the world. I have a good knowledge of such subjects, and of the Greek classics…I let another man read some of it the other day…I asked him if he thought I would make a good historian. He said: 'No!' That stuff is supposed to be dry as dust and hard work to read, and you make it so interesting one can't put it down." In fine condition.
