Free-franked mailing envelope as president, 5 x 2.75, addressed in Buchanan's hand to "William Nicholson Esquire, Erie, Pennsylvania," and franked in the upper right, "Free, James Buchanan." The front panel bears a "Free" postmark from Washington, D.C., dated 1860. The red wax seal on the reverse has diminutive, but mostly legible, text around the circumference, "Seal of the President of the United [States]." In very good condition, with overall soiling and staining, heavier on the reverse; interestingly, the red wax seal is largely intact (though clearly opened).
