Description

Tombaugh on what makes Pluto a planet

ALS, one page on an 8.5 x 11 copy of a Stackpole Books catalog page for his book Out of the Darkness: The Planet Pluto, August 24, 1982. Letter to H. J. Niederreiter, in full: "Most astronomers regard Pluto as a planet. Possibly Pluto may be an escaped satellite from Neptune, but since the immediate primary body around which it now revolves is the sun, that makes it a planet. Besides, Pluto has a satellite, Charon, discovered in 1978 at the U. S. Naval Obs. The methods and procedures I used to discover it and the problems of Pluto, I have described in this book." Tombaugh draws an arrow pointing to the publishing company's logo, and writes: "Publisher. Also published in Don Mills, Ontario, Canada, by Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd." In fine condition.
