Description

Queen consort of the United Kingdom as the wife of King William IV (1792-1849). Three items by Queen Adelaide: an ALS signed "Ad.," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, November 16, [1849], to Countess Brownlow, with its original mailing envelope addressed in the queen's hand; a biblical AQS signed "AR" on an off-white 4.5 x 3 card, "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up"; and a small original color painting of violets attributed to Queen Adelaide, accomplished on an off-white 4.5 x 3.5 card, annotated on the reverse in another hand, "Drawn by Queen Adelaide." The ALS, written less than three weeks before her death, reads, in part: "I am so weak still & cannot do any thing yet that it is necessary to keep here those who must speak for me tho' I cannot see them neither. I make very slow progress tho' I begin to have better nights." In overall very good to fine condition, with a catalog description affixed at the head of the ALS.
