Scarce 'speech appointment' postcard issued to "Mr. Sinclair Lewis," 5.5 x 3.25, November 11, 1941, signed in the designated field in black ink by Lewis. The postcard is pre-addressed to "Mr. George V. Denny, Jr. President, The Town Hall, Inc., 123 West 43rd Street, New York, N. Y.," with the reverse affirming in type Lewis's speech to be held on "Wednesday morning, November 19, Town Hall, 11 o'clock," with the following speech subject: "Has the Modern Woman Made Good—debate with Mr. Browne." In fine condition, with two old pieces of tape at upper corners.
Denny was the longtime moderator of one of radio's first talk shows, America's Town Meeting of the Air, as well as the executive director of the League for Political Education/Town Hall, which produced the program. After cutting his teeth at Columbia University, in 1930 Denny was employed as the associate director of the League for Political Education headquartered at Town Hall on Forty-third Street, organizing lectures of all political creeds to speak on various aspects of public affairs. In 1937, Denny was made director and changed the name of the organization to Town Hall, Incorporated.
