Pierre de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil-Cavagnial

Last governor-general of New France (Canada) prior to its capture by the British in the Seven Years' War (1698-1778). Untranslated ALS in French, signed “Vaudreuil,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9, June 9, 1751. In fine condition. At the time he penned this letter, Vaudreuil-Cavagnial was serving as governor of Louisiana, a position he held from 1743 to 1753. He was in command of Quebec during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, and authorized the surrender of Quebec. Later, when the British were before Montreal, he was forced to surrender all of Canada.
