Description

William McKinley

LS signed “Wm. McKinley, Jr.,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives letterhead, August 8, 1890. Letter to Kate B. Sherwood, chairman of the Woman’s Relief Corps, in part: "The bill you refer to shall have my careful consideration. I shall be happy to talk to Genl. Cogswell as suggested." A note by Sherman penned in the lower margin reads, in part: "Since writing Major McKinley I learned from reliable sources that the reason our bill was not taken up was because of the limit of appropriations, as agreed upon in the Republican caucus, early in the session, had been reached." In fine condition. McKinley served as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee from 1889 to 1891.
