US Marine Corps sergeant (1916-1987) who photographed the first flag-raising atop Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of the first Iwo Jima flag raising, signed and inscribed in black ballpoint "1st Flag Raising, Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. To Jimmy Davis, who flew the 'kites' in World War I, Lou Lowery.” In fine condition, with light creasing to upper left corner. After this flag was determined to be too small to be seen from afar, a larger flag was raised atop Mt. Suribachi, as famously captured by the photographer Joe Rosenthal. Due to an agreement between the Marine Corps and the Associated Press in regard to Rosenthal's famous photo of the second flag raising, Lowery's photos taken on Iwo Jima were not published until 1947.
