Description

Delp's reference acetate for his iconic 'More Than a Feeling'

Brad Delp's personally-owned single-sided 8″ acetate for Boston's classic 'More Than a Feeling,' filled out in type on the Capitol Stereo label with the band's name, "Boston," track name, "More Than a Feeling," and track length, "3:45." In fine condition. This ultra-rare acetate may have been a one-off produced while trying to create the radio edit for the hit single—it is a minute shorter than the album version of the track, and forty seconds longer than the single edit. 'More Than a Feeling' was released as the lead single from Boston's self-titled debut album in 1976, and peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Today, it is considered a standard of the classic rock genre.

Acetate discs, also known as reference lacquers, look similar to typical vinyl records, but differ drastically in that they are used only in the production process and are not usually available to the general public. Their purpose is to allow producers, artists, and sound engineers to double-check the quality of a final recording for any flaws or errors before it is sent off for mass production and release. Whereas a vinyl record is mass-produced with a stamp, an acetate is created using a recording lathe to cut the grooves into a blank disc in real time, an extremely exacting process that ensures the most precise recording possible. From the Brad Delp Collection, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from Micki Delp.
