Union general who lost his leg at the Battle of Port Hudson, and was later elected to Congress (1826-1905). Partly-printed DS, signed “H. E. Paine,” one page, 10.5 x 7.25, January 10, 1881. Stock certificate issued to D. W. Middleton, Jr., for 1,000 shares of the Ivanhoe Mining Company, signed at the conclusion by Paine as the company's president. The certificate boasts an appealing vignette portraying miners hard at work. In fine condition.
