Description

Union soldier and diplomat (1837-1921) who served as the personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant and to General William T. Sherman; after the war he became vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company and then later the US Ambassador to France. Scarce ALS, three pages on two sheets, 5 x 8, July 25, 1870. Letter to Secretary of War William W. Belknap, in full: "I have just received your letters and submitted the one relating to transfers in the Army to the President. He says go ahead without submitting the cases to him. If he wishes any particular cases disposed of he will inform you from time to time. He wishes you to transfer Dent to an Artillery regiment as he is now unassigned and would otherwise be mustered out next January. We are enjoying the sea breezes here immensely but so many papers are pouring in upon us that I am about as busy as in Washington. I am doing my 'own clerking' now. I shall get into my cottage in about a week." In fine condition, with light toning to the first page.
