Description

Huntington receives a report on "The Louisiana Purchase and our Title West of the Rocky Mountains"

Railroad industrialist (1821-1900) known as one of the 'Big Four' of western railroading. TLS signed “C. P. Huntington,” one page, 8 x 10.75, personal letterhead, October 10, 1898. Letter to Commissioner of the Land Office Binger Hermann, in part: "I am very much obliged to you for your special report on 'The Louisiana Purchase and our Title West of the Rocky Mountains, with a Review of Annexation by the United States.' I have not had time yet to look over it, but I am going to take it to my house and know that I shall enjoy reading what you have to say on this subject, which is particularly interesting in the present attitude of public thought and discussion; then I am going to give it to the public library which I founded some years ago in Westchester and which is doing the quiet, steady work which such institutions do in country villages." Affixed to a slightly larger scrapbook page bearing an affixed TLS from Associate Justice David Brewer on the reverse. In very good condition, with brushing to the signature, and overall wrinkling due to affixed scrapbook page.
