American double-gold medalist in speed skating at the 1932 Winter Olympics (1910-2002) who was the first American to win two gold medals at one Winter Olympics event; Shea is the patriarch of the first family with three generations of Winter Olympians. AQS on a white 8.5 x 11 sheet, signed in black ballpoint, "Jack Shea, 1/18/02." Shea pens the Olympic athlete's oath, in full: "'We swear that we will take part in the Olympic Games in loyal competition respecting the rules and regulations governing them and desirous of participating in them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the honor of country and the glory of sport.'" Shea adds his name to the upper portion, "Olympic Oath, Jack Shea, Feb. 4 1932, Lake Placid, N.Y." In fine condition. Shea was killed by a drunk driver just four days after writing this letter, and roughly two weeks before he was to watch his grandson participate in the Salt Lake Games. Accompanied by a modern reprint photo showing Shea taking the Athlete's Oath during the opening ceremony of the 1932 Olympics.
