Financier and militia officer during the Revolutionary War (1733-1808) who made the first public proclamation of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Pennsylvania State House on July 8, 1776. Manuscript DS, signed "John Nixon," one page, 8 x 6.5, March 14, 1776. Nixon endorses a pay order calling for the Committee of Accounts to "pay Capt'n John Hamilton or order sixty six pounds nine shillings & four pence being the amount of his rations." Signed in the lower right by Nixon. In very good condition, with partial separations to folds, a few repairs to reverse (including a couple small repaired tears to signature area), and chipping to brittle edges. A fantastic document dating to the historic year of 1776.
