Uncommon circa 1870s 4.5 x 6.25 portrait of the young Abraham Lincoln reproduced using the carbon process by Sherman & McHugh, affixed to its original 10 x 12 studio mount. This image, originally captured as a daguerreotype in 1846 by N. H. Shephard of Springfield, Illinois, is the earliest known photograph of Lincoln. Pencil annotations on the reverse of the mount indicate that this was originally sold as part of the Peter Gilsey collection in 1903. In fine condition. The daguerreotye from which this reproduction was made today resides in the Library of Congress.
