Description

Award-winning illustrator and children's book author from New England (1915-2008). ALS, three pages, 5.75 x 7.75, no date but postmarked December 14, 1945. Warm letter to Judge Frederick B. Smilie, featuring five ultra-detailed drawings. In part: "If you but knew the pleasure your letter, and the present to baby Thomas, have given! If I could but tell you of the happiness the very thought of your kindness fills me with!! Words do not come easily from my pen, so you must try to imagine…letters must in some way bring an impression of the writer and anyone who could write such delightful letters must have magic about them. Maybe you once listened to fairy laughter, and heard the wild geese calling between night and dawning. I'm sure everyone has, once…I am truly sorry you have had so much to bear these past months, and I am filled with compassion for you, but please, oh please do not have a heavy heart, the world is so beautiful in its spring gladness…I only wish to comfort you, you who have brought happiness to me with your feelings for my drawings. Had the books done nothing else but brought forth your letters of appreciation I could at least rest content, knowing they had stirred in another human soul such feelings. Enclosed are the pictures of the children. I thought you might enjoy them and so bring some of their happiness to you." Tudor's fine drawings include depictions of her house, gardens, and family. In fine condition. Accompanied by the five small photos of her children mentioned in the letter, and the original mailing envelope addressed in her own hand, incorporating her name, "T. Tudor," in the return address on the flap. Tudor's drawings are wonderfully rendered, showing her skill as a miniaturist. A fascinating and very personal letter, done at the height of her career as an author and illustrator—she received the Caldecott Medal for Mother Goose in 1945.
