Description

Branch Rickey

Baseball executive and Hall of Famer (1881-1965) best known for signing Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Brooklyn National League Baseball Club letterhead, February 14, 1949. Letter to Gus Steiger of the New York Daily Mirror, in full: "I think you did a fine job—the Baseball Writers Dinner job, I mean. Cardinal Spellman's prayer, closing his address, was, in my judgment, the peak point of dais performance in the whole history of the Writers' dinners. In literacy quality, in inspirational content and politico–religious philosophy,—in my book it was tops. Whoever had to do with his appearance should have a special vote of thanks. I think the Chapter is to be congratulated in having you for its president this year." In fine condition, with a block of light toning from prior display. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
