Description

Leonard Baskin

ALS signed “Leonard,” two pages both sides, 7.25 x 11, The Gehenna Press letterhead, December 15, 1963. Letter concerning his exhibition schedule at the Grace Borgenicht Gallery, in part: "We had planned a drawing show first, but as things have developed, I strongly urge you to consider having the sculpture first. This summer has proved to be a great sculptural development for me. I have done 7 plasters, as follows: 1. Hephaestus. life size…this is the first truly monumental figure in bronze which I have done…2. Teiresias. 3/4 life size. a rather bizarre figure…the fact that he also looks a little bit like a Jewish fish peddler adds meaning, for me at least…3. Seated bird man…probably the last of his species. 4. Caprice. a sort of scherzo…5. Lifesized portrait of Wilfred Owen. rather unlike anything I've ever done…6 & 7. Two smallish heads. one of a 17th c. Dutch artist, rather like some of the drawings I've done last year. He's wearing a large Dutch hat & is quite cunning. The other is a head of a very fat poet. The old idea but handled with new means…The corollary to this outburst of playing with plaster is that I've done no drawings. What I would suggest therefore, is that we change the order of the exhibitions." In fine condition, with a small stain to the left edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
