Description

Fabulously rare unused cover proof for Electric Ladyland

Exceedingly rare alternate album cover proof designed for Jimi Hendrix's 1968 masterpiece Electric Ladyland, 12 x 12.5, portraying Hendrix with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, along with psychedelic comic book-style text, "Electric Ladyland, The Jimi Hendrix Experience." Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 18.5 x 19. In fine condition, with a few mild creases. This proof was designed by the Warner Bros. Records art department in 1968 as the proposed front cover for Hendrix's classic double album, but ultimately it was decided to go with the iconic close-up of Hendrix's head without any text. The image of Hendrix and his bandmates used on this proof was chosen for the back cover, but the final product used an entirely different, more traditional typeface for the text. Proofs like these were produced in very small numbers to be reviewed by the artists and record executives to approve prior to manufacture, and this example comes from a Warner Bros. Records executive. Given that only a few other examples are known to have survived, this is an exceptionally desirable, museum-quality Hendrix piece.
