Extremely rare color 25 x 41 Dutch poster for the 1925 Universal horror film The Phantom Of The Opera [Het Spook Van De Opera], starring Lon Chaney. Linen-backed and professionally restored to fine condition. Rolled. Chaney played the title role of the deformed Phantom in Universal's silent adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel Le Fantome de l'Opera, wearing ghastly self-devised make-up that the studio kept secret until the film's premiere. Perhaps that is why this poster, designed by Dutch artist Frans Bosen, features an image of the seemingly disembodied lantern-lit head of the Rat Catcher, as seen in a scene with Raoul and Ledoux, rather than Chaney's iconic visage—the face of the Phantom was kept as a surprise to shock the audience. A magnificent rarity from a truly classic horror film.
