Description

Vivid pair of one-of-a-kind 1989 Rolling Stones poster designs

Original pair of circa 1989 hand-colored preliminary designs for Rolling Stones posters by psychedelic artist Gary Grimshaw, both accomplished on artist’s boards with a mixture of ink, paint, and colored pencil and marker around affixed cutout images of the band. The first piece, 9.75 x 14.25, shows the band with their instruments playing above silver shadows, the band’s logo outlined in red, with “Silver Anniversary” barely visible in the black lower portion; the second, 10 x 15, features the band posing together with sunglasses, the band’s logo filled in red, with the lower portion listing the supporting act, “Living Colour,” and concert information, “October 25-26-28-29, Shea Stadium.” Pencil notations immediately below the band read: “Steel Wheels Tour—1989.” Both boards are signed twice along the bottom in black ink by Grimshaw, who adds “1989 ArtRock.” In overall fine condition. Grimshaw initially made his name as the main poster artist for Detroit's Grande Ballroom. Influenced by Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, and Victor Moscoso, Grimshaw has earned his own place within the rock and roll art scene by producing psychedelic posters for bands like Cream, The Who, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. These preliminary mock-ups were created for the Rolling Stones in order to gain their approval for poster production—unfortunately, however, they were not approved and therefore never printed. Overall, this is wonderful, unique original artwork by one of rock's most esteemed artists.
