Two days before leaving office, Buchanan appoints a lieutenant in the “Rock Creek Cavalry”

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15 x 9.25, March 2, 1861. Buchanan appoints Alfred Ray “First Lieutenant of the ‘Rock Creek Cavalry’ of the Militia of the District of Columbia.” Signed at the conclusion by Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of War Joseph Holt. Double-suede-matted and framed with a portrait and a biographical plaque to an overall size of 24.25 x 25.5. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light staining. Oversized.
