American novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, and poet (1917–1967) whose work is often described as Southern Gothic; she is best remembered for her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Rare DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Doubleday and Company letterhead, February 10, 1951. McCullers gives Doubleday and company permission to reprint her story entitled The Sojourner, which originally appeared in the May 1950 edition of Mademoiselle. The story will be reprinted in a volume entitled Prize Stories of 1951: The O. Henry Awards, Selected by Herschel Brickell. Signed at the conclusion by McCullers, who adds the date, and crosses out the “Mr.” and adds “Mrs.” In fine condition, with a staple hole to top left and expected mailing folds.
