Description

Noble Sissle

Jazz composer, bandleader, and playwright (1889–1975) best remembered for the Broadway musical Shuffle Along, and its hit song ‘I'm Just Wild About Harry.’ Uncommon vintage glossy 8 x 9.25 close-up photo of Sissle, signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, “To Millie, Noble Sissle, 1938.” Reverse bears a William Morris Agency stamp. In fine condition, with trimmed edges, a small stain above the inscription, and staining to the right border which could be successfully matted out if desired. Consignor notes that her mother, Emily Grous Hollister, nicknamed ‘Millie,’ obtained the signature while working as a concierge to the stars at Hartford, Connecticut’s State Theatre during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
