Description

Roger B. Taney

Partly-printed DS, signed “R. B. Taney,” one page, 8 x 10, March 7, 1834. Acknowledgment of a letter from the Cashier Office Bank “inclosing certificate of transfer to the United States of $19,200 of 4 1/2 per cent. Stock of 1824.” Signed at the conclusion by Taney as secretary of the treasury. In fine condition, with one light stain near the left edge. Appointed by President Andrew Jackson, Taney served as secretary of the treasury for less than a year before his recess appointment failed before the US Senate; during his brief tenure, Taney famously ordered an end to the deposit of Federal money in the Second Bank of the United States, an act that killed the institution. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
