Description

Supervising Monaco’s entertainment industry

TLS in French and English, signed “Rainier P. de Monaco,” five pages, 8.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, September 11, 1968. Letter to Marcel Palmaro, head of the Monaco company SBM. In part: “Barelli. As you know I am a fervent supporter, and protector of this excellent orchestra, that the clientele loves and appreciates. I know you like the band also. But it seems that Groote has other ideas, and is trying to kill the renewal of Barelli’s contract…If we lose Barelli, it is a catastrophe he is the backbone and the ‘base’ of all your entertainment, and he must be kept on…You need Barelli’s orchestra, and you do not need other orchestras. My God you yourself experienced this summer the dreadful quality of the orchestras that were engaged by the directeur general!…For the Sea Club you need a small ‘young’ formation of very modern dance music you can get these formations cheap and only take them for two weeks. But you do not need South American music, that we all have heard too much!” Rainier makes several handwritten corrections and emendations throughout. In fine condition, with light creasing and a few tiny tears (primarily along the right edge). Prince Rainier was the principal shareholder of SBM, which owned and operated most of Monaco’s attractions. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
