LS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 9.75, April 23, 1823. Letter concerning the requested appointment of a cadet, in part: “On examining the list of applicants his name appears on file, but his age is not stated a knowledge of which was requisite to comply with the Law which provides that no person can be appointed a Cadet whose age is less than 14 or above 21 years. All the estimated vacancies having been filled, it is not in my power to appoint him for the current year.” Includes the original address leaf accomplished in another hand and franked in the upper left, “J. C. Calhoun.” In very good condition, with scattered toning, splitting along intersecting folds, and seal-related paper loss to detached (but present) integral address leaf. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
