Description

Recalling the 1947 hearings of the Hollywood 10

Academy Award–winning screenwriter (1905–1976) of such films as Spartacus, Exodus, and Papillon who attained worldwide notoriety as a member of the blacklisted ‘Hollywood Ten.’ TLS, two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 7, 1972. Letter to Eric Bentley, in part: “I agree with you on absurdly high incomes; my objection goes to their relevance. If absurdly high Hollywood incomes are not relevant to the cases of some of the Ten, why are not their even higher Broadway incomes relevant to the cases of Kazan, Odets and Miller? When both of us have more time I’d also like to discuss with you the question of candor and what I conceive to be the difference between public assertion of political principles and public confession of organizational affiliation. I saw Karen Morley between two and three years ago. She was sweet, uncowed and older. I think her career as an actress was completely destroyed, and with it some of her happiness. I’m putting out feelers and will soon let you know where you can get in touch with her.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
