American writer (1842–c.1914) best known for his vivid short stories (including the classic ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’) and his satirical ‘The Devil’s Dictionary.’ In 1913, while traveling with Pancho Villa’s troops during the Mexican Revolution, Bierce disappeared; his ultimate fate remains a mystery. ALS, one page both sides, 4.75 x 8, no date but circa early 1890s. Letter to the writer Eugene Field. In full: “Some months ago Heaven put it into your heart to write of my ‘Tales of Soldiers and Civilians’ in a way to gratify me exceedingly. I have been ever since wondering if it would be proper to express to you my cause of gratitude. I’m unlearned in the etiquette of criticism, if there is one, so I refer the question to you. If this note does not imply that you were moved by other considerations than regard for literature, and if it is not presumptuous to suppose that my feeling is anything to you, please accept it in a friendly spirit. And if it is an impertinence, overlook it.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
