American novelist (1892–1977) best known as the author of such crime/noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. Two letters: an ALS signed “Jim,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 12, 1973, in part: “Thanks for your sweet card, & the picture. You’re certainly the prettiest grandmother I’ve seen in a long time—I’m inspired to write a book to be called ‘Grandma,’ about a problem child to the whole family—she’s grandmother to them all”; and a TLS signed “James M. Cain,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, July 22, 1971, in part: “Just a note to say how proud I was of you, for the way you rose to the occasion, when Nixon descended upon you, on short notice, as I assume. When I read of the Chateau Lafite Rothsschild [sic], I remembered you shudder of horror at the automobile manufacturer who ordered Chateau Iquem [sic] with the steaks, to exhibit his connoisseurship.” Cain makes a few handwritten corrections to the text. In overall fine condition, with scattered folds and creases. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
